"The caller identified himself as Peter and said he was calling on behalf of Microsoft and that they had detected a viral infection of the Microsoft Operating System on my computer. As a consequence he wished me to go to my computer and allow him access so that he could detect the infection and remove it remotely."
If you receive a call like this:
Hang up!
Do not give the caller any personal or banking details.
Do not allow the caller remote access to your computer.
Microsoft does not make unsolicited calls to help you fix your computer.
